Spring Brings Severe Weather Across the U.S. | SERVPRO® of Tallahassee

Seasons Weather Changes Quickly

The United States is one of the largest countries in the world. Seasonal weather, as a result, varies greatly throughout the country—different parts of the country experience a variety of weather patterns, resulting in a variety of seasonal weather threats from region to region.

As spring approaches and warm and cold air masses collide throughout the country, let’s take a look at the many weather patterns that might emerge across the country, as well as what we can anticipate in Florida.

The Pacific Northwest is prone to heavy rain in the spring, which may cause flooding and water damage. Snow will continue to accumulate at higher elevations, and its melting and runoff will create its own problems.

Winter’s chill lasts the longest in the Upper Midwest and Northeast, where very cold temperatures will persist throughout the season. From Maine to the Dakotas, residents can expect very cold temperatures, as well as the possibility of snow and frigid weather, far into the spring season.

The Southwest, in particular, will have to be on the lookout for severe heat waves that can threaten lives and safety. The South Pacific, including Hawaii, will be on high alert for tsunamis produced by tectonic activity,

Windstorms, derechos and the potential of wildfires, which spread quickly in high winds and dry seasons, will be a worry for the central United States, from Iowa to Texas. Tornado Alley is a portion of this area where strong storms and tornadoes are common.

Finally, the Southeast, including here in Florida, may experience a range of severe weather, from tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in the landlocked states to dangerous rip currents, plus early-season hurricanes later in the spring.

Florida has the greatest yearly number of thunderstorms in the United States. The most serious weather hazards here are hurricanes and powerful coastal storms. Hurricanes routinely make landfall along Florida’s coast, with hurricane-force winds striking the state on average of three times every five years.

Regardless of where you are in the United States, extreme weather is a real danger. There is no harm in having an emergency plan in place, no matter how different yours is from a friend’s in another state.

If extreme weather leaves you with damage from water, fire or other elements, help is a click away. Contact SERVPRO for fast, expert recovery.

The Building Blocks of Every Fire | SERVPRO® of Tallahassee

Sometimes all it takes to help a complicated concept make sense is a simple visual aid. That’s the case with fire—though the intricacies of fire can’t be explained in a moment’s time, there’s a visual aid that succinctly explains the origins of every fire.

Fire scientists call it the fire tetrahedron, and its four equal, triangular sides represent the four equal parts that comprise the start and proliferation of every fire, ever.

No, really—every fire boils down to these four elements, and every fire can be combatted by removing any one of them.

The 4 Things a Fire Needs to Live

Fuel. If you’ve ever eaten food (and it seems pretty likely you have), then you can understand the concept of a fire’s fuel needs. For every fire to begin, there has to be a fuel source for the fire to consume.

Heat. Any potential fuel source has to be flammable, as a matter of course. And any flammable material has to be hot enough to ignite before a fire can occur.

Oxygen. In a similar way, a fire also needs oxygen to survive. The oxygen in the air around a fire feeds the process of oxidation necessary for combustion to begin and repeat.

Chemical Chain Reaction. All these things combine together in a chain reaction which, like objects in Newton’s third law, continues until acted upon by an outside force. What might those forces be? Let’s take a gander.

The 4 Ways to Stop a Fire

Cool it. If a fire breaks out in your yard from an errant spark from the fall fire pit, you could wait for winter to cool the air down enough to restore thermal balance between the fire and the fuel…or you could simply dump a bucket of water on it.

Smother it. You know how those little ladybug fireworks are supposed to spin really fast and take off into the sky, but sometimes they only sit there and burn? When you instinctively stamp those things out, you’re actually smothering the fire by cutting off its air supply.

Starve it. The same thing that happens to people who don’t intake calories happens to fires that can’t intake fuel—they weaken, then stop.

Interrupt the chain reaction. These fires are working hard to maintain their reactive cycles, but certain gases have been developed, which, when introduced to the atmosphere around a fire, are able to remove links from the chain reaction and stop the catalytic motion. These are particularly helpful with electrical fires, for which water is unsafe as a coolant.

Fire Damage Fire Damage

In the 21st century, there may be nothing we as a society have less patience for than waiting. With all-knowing satellites with high-speed internet access in the palms of so many hands, it’s no wonder we’ve grown a little impatient.

Waiting can be a necessary thing, even an important one in some cases. But when you have sudden, acute damage in your home due to a water issue, a fire or a weather event, one thing you certainly do not want to do is wait—not only because it’s inconvenient, but because being made to wait for service can add more damage to what’s already happening.

That’s why at SERVPRO we make sure you can always get the help you need—by providing all-hours emergency service, 365 days a year. We know your emergencies don’t keep office hours, and they don’t wait for a convenient Monday start date. So we make ourselves available at all times.

Having to wait can cost you, and here’s how.

After a fire. The flames come in and do their thing, but that’s not the end of the issue. Once the flames are cleared out, your home takes extended damage from soot and smoke, which instantly go to work staining and ruining carpets, walls, ceilings and possessions.

Left to sit for only a few hours, the work of soot and smoke becomes irreversible, and the only option for getting rid of them is total replacement of the affected surfaces.

After water damage. Waiting to clean up water damage will result in further damage to soaked surfaces, drywall and furniture, but that’s not its most potent threat. Only 48 hours after water invades, mold starts growing in moistened areas, unless the water is removed and the resulting humidity and moisture properly dealt with.

Furthermore, the damage from natural disasters, storms and freak weather events can be both sudden and catastrophic, and having access to quick service can prevent things from worsening or having damaging effects become permanent.

When disaster strikes, you can’t wait. SERVPRO’s 24-hour service makes fast action a reality.

When you need help after a home or business disaster, fast service is a priority, and there’s nobody faster or more prepared than SERVPRO. Call us anytime to take advantage of our 24-hour emergency service.

The Numbers Don’t Lie About Water Damage

Leaking Sink Leaking Sink creates damage to vanity

Remember that movie from a couple of years ago where there was a big purple guy with a massive chin, and he was going to destroy half of everything? Then there was a team of heroes who fought to stop him and his destructive, “inevitable” plan? Well, you may not have realized it at the time, but that movie was less a story about good and evil and more a story about the struggle going on even now in your home against the prospect of water damage.

Just ask the directors and they’ll tell you. No way we would make something like that up.

The heroes are the plumbing system in your home, and the “inevitable” foe? You guessed it; that’s water, looking for any and every opportunity to break the bonds of your pipes and wreak havoc on your floors and foundation.

All jokes aside, the most seemingly unstoppable disaster you face as a homeowner is water damage. It’s one of the most likely insurance claims you’re likely to make.

That’s why it’s so important to keep your heroic team of pipes and sewer lines well-equipped and maintained—so that they can fight the good fight against this destructive foe.

Let’s examine your predicament.

24. This is the percentage of all home insurance claims that are based around water damage—almost a fourth of all claims. Out of every 50 homeowners in the country, one of them will file a water claim each year.

48. You have this many hours, if that, to stop mold growth after a water event.

98. This is the percentage of homes with basements that will experience water damage in them at some point. There’s almost no avoiding this one, short of lucking out and moving repeatedly at just the right time.

10,234. The average water damage claim costs this many dollars. Water damage can happen quickly, and on a massive scale.

14,000. This is the number of U.S. citizens who are hit by a water damage event each day. That means something is happening every six seconds around the country.

13,000,000,000. That’s a lot of zeroes, and it represents the gigantic costs of water damage repair each year in the United States alone.

So is there hope, or is water damage indeed inevitable? The good news is that your attention to regular maintenance and fixing leaks is directly proportional to your ability to prevent many types of water damage. So stay the course.

If water damage catches you off-guard and leaves you all wet, you’ve got help on your side. Contact SERVPRO to see how we can quickly and fully restore water damage to your home or business.

The Leading Causes of Home Fires | SERVPRO® of Tallahassee

11/5/2021 (Permalink)

Fires begin due to a number of causes, ranging from the careless to the intentional. And anytime heat sources are used or misused, there’s a risk of an errant flame taking off.

Despite all the advertising and education that’s gone into home fire safety and prevention, fires in the home still account for a quarter of all reported fires in the United States each year.

So let’s do some digging. What’s behind all these home fires, and how many of them could be prevented? Maybe this article will finally be the one that turns the tide.

Cooking. The overwhelming leader in home fires is cooking. Some cooking fires are avoidable, though—in fact, most are. The top cause of cooking fires? Unattended cooking. Taken into actionable steps, that means that the No. 1 thing you can do to make your house safer from fire is to be more careful when you cook, and never leave your stovetop or grill alone.

Heating equipment. Heating equipment causes the second highest number of home fires. While some of it is caused by equipment failure, much of this cause comes in the form of portable space heaters, which are prone to tipping over, overheating or overloading circuits. And of course, any heater is capable of setting fire to objects or materials that sit closer than three feet away.

Electrical fires. Some electrical fires hide behind your walls and are difficult to catch. But routine maintenance and inspection can reveal problems present and forthcoming—so can responsible use of extension cords, lighting and wattage limitations.

Intentional fires. It’s unnerving to think about it, but a surprising 28,000 intentional home fires are started each year. This doesn’t include fires started for a regular purpose that get out of hand, only fires started with the intent of burning a piece of property.

Smoking materials. Fires caused by smoking materials make up only 5% of home fires, but they make up more than a quarter of all home fire deaths. Smoking fires often happen because cigarettes are dropped or remain lit as individuals lie in bed, creating both fire and carbon monoxide hazards.

Regardless of the cause, SERVPRO is here for you if your home is affected by fire. Contact your local team today to see how we can help.

Make Sure You're Choosing the Right Service Company - SERVPRO of Tallahassee

10/7/2021 (Permalink)

Sometimes the most difficult decisions to make are ones that require both speed and a lot of trust. This is the case when a natural disaster or accident does damage to your home that requires restoration.

When a situation arises, you will need to execute some quick but critical thinking as you consider the needs of your home and decide what restoration company to reach out to.

If it’s something you’ve never considered before, it may be helpful to have some idea what to look out for. Here are three questions that any respectable service company should be able to answer to your satisfaction.

Are They Legit?

It’s an unfortunate truth, but it happens— scammers and con artists come out of the woodwork to take advantage of home and business owners whose property has been damaged. These are typified by unlicensed individuals who come in from out of town with no local reputation or client base, making claims of incredibly cheap work that requires a deposit, which they can then retain while your work goes undone or done very poorly.

Fortunately, when you contact SERVPRO, you’re getting in contact with one of the most reputable teams in the industry, with a long history of satisfying the needs of homeowners. And when you partner with the same company the PGA Tour trusts for its cleanup and recovery efforts, you know you’re getting the highest quality work and service.

Will They Be There When I Need Help?

There are 365 days in a year, and we’re ready on every single one of them. When an emergency hits your home, you don’t have time to wait.

That’s why when you click a link on our website or pick up the phone, we’re geared up and ready on the other side—because we can’t wait to help you, and you don’t have time to wait at all.

Where’s a Fleet When You Need One?

SERVPRO of Tallahassee is a local, neighborhood franchise, led and operated by experts in the local community—this means you get fast, knowledgeable service from folks who know the specific needs of Tallahassee homeowners.

But when hurricanes and major events call for additional help and technicians, we call on the backup—the nationwide network of tools, technicians and resources that make up the full SERVPRO fleet. Big jobs don’t intimidate us, and your needs never get pushed aside.

When you call SERVPRO, you can rest easy knowing you’ve got the trusted leader in the restoration industry on the other end of the line. When disaster hits home, contact us to get our local experts and nationwide network on your side.

Water damage event while homeowner was out of town!!

8/1/2018 (Permalink)

In the featured photo you can see extensive water damage that left the floor damaged beyond repair, and visible mold present.

SERVPRO of Tallahassee would like to take the time to give our residents and community members some advice since it is summer and lots of you folks may be traveling out of town.

One of our Tallahassee residents was away from their home for a long time. During their vacancy, a water damage event occurred and went unnoticed. When the homeowner returned to their home, they found it in ruins. Ceilings had collapsed on the first floor, as water flowed from an upstairs toilet for what looks like days. The home had so much water damage inside that you could see signs of water flowing down the brick of the home on the outside. What is even worse is that the water  caused damage to the HVAC system and the system shut down. At that point the home became a breading grounds for microbial growth to start forming and it did, as you can see in the picture. Of course once SERVPRO of Tallahassee received notice of the water loss and mold damage our production technicians were on site immediately and went to work to restore this Tallahassee home.

Our advice to our customers, if you go out of town, please have a trusted friend or family member or even a property manager go check on your property as frequently as possible. It is very important to catch water damages when they happen so your home suffers less damage.

Our Employee of the Month for July 2019!!!!

8/1/2018 (Permalink)

Every month our team at SERVPRO of Tallahassee takes a vote for employee of the month. Our vote is comprised of a blind ballot where each of our team members are given a ballot and they vote for the individual who they feel should be recognized as employee of month. Additionally, we count customer compliments as a vote too. So each month we keep a record of compliments our team receives either as a whole or individually for that month. We tally each compliment as a vote. So, at the end of month, we not only count our own votes but essentially the votes of the community members we service as well.

With that said, SERVPRO of Tallahassee would like to take a minute to give praise to one of our highly trained production technicians, Robert Philbrick, for receiving employee of the month for the month of July. Thank you Robert for your long hours and dedication. Robert is helping bring the brand to life with his hard work and compassion shown in the field. Thank you Robert for being part of our team!!!

Are You Prepared for This Hurricane Season??

7/30/2018 (Permalink)

With Hurricane season upon us, SERVPRO of Tallahassee wants to make sure our neighbors and our community is prepared for this Hurricane season. Hurricanes can cause lots of issues for our community as we have seen these past three seasons. We want to make sure we are ready to help, and our community members are readily prepared if disaster strikes.

In 2018, The Florida panhandle was ravaged by Hurricane Michael. Michael is the first hurricane to make landfall in the United States as a category 5 since Hurricane Andrew in 1992, and only the fourth on record. The others are the Labor Day Hurricane in 1935 and Hurricane Camille in 1969. Michael is also the strongest hurricane landfall on record in the Florida Panhandle and only the second known category 5 landfall on the northern Gulf coast.

At least 74 deaths had been attributed to the storm, including 59 in the United States and 15 in Central America. Hurricane Michael caused an estimated $25.1 billion in damages, including $100 million in economic losses in Central America, damage to U.S. fighter jets with a replacement cost of approximately $6 billion at Tyndall Air Force Base, and at least $6.23 billion in insurance claims in the U.S.. Losses to agriculture alone exceeded $3.87 billion. As a tropical disturbance, the system caused extensive flooding in Central America in concert with a second disturbance over the eastern Pacific Ocean. In Cuba, the hurricane's winds left over 200,000 people without power as the storm passed to the island's west. Along the Florida panhandle, the cities of Mexico Beach and Panama City suffered the worst of Michael, with catastrophic damage reported due to the extreme winds and storm surge. Numerous homes were flattened and trees felled over a wide swath of the panhandle. A maximum wind gust of 139 mph  was measured at Tyndall Air Force Base before the sensors failed. As Michael tracked across the Southeastern United States, strong winds caused extensive power outages across the region.

Although we can’t prevent hurricanes from coming we do want to provide to you the information you will need to help stay safe this season. When it comes to safety we look to The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for guidance. FEMA agrees that being prepared makes sense in any emergency situation stating “Preparing Makes Sense. The likelihood that you and your family will survive a house fire depends as much on having a working smoke detector and an exit strategy, as on a well - trained fire department. The same is true for surviving a terrorist attack or other emergency. We must have the tools and plans in place to make it on our own, at least for a period of time, no matter where we are when disaster strikes. Just like having a working smoke detector, preparing for the unexpected makes sense.” So please, SERVPRO of Tallahassee urges everyone to please plan for this hurricane season and make sure you are ready!! Follow FEMA’S four steps for emergency preparedness which can be found by clicking the link provided. Just hold the control key and click on the link provided, you will find helpful tips from FEMA to get by in an emergency situation, as well as step by step instructions.

Microbial growth discovered during "DIY" project.

During a recent "DIY" renovation of a master bathroom, the homeowner discovered microbial growth behind their shower wall. The homeowner immediately turned to the mold experts at SERVPRO of Tallahassee to help remove the unhealthy microbial growth they found. Our Production Manager Robert Philbrick was first onsite to assess the damage. He took detailed report, grabbed measurements, and obtained photos for our office staff to produce a line item estimate. Steve Irving Operations Manager of SERVPRO of Tallahassee quickly went to work to produce the estimate for the homeowner. Communication was made by our Office Manager Reba McKenzie, who sent estimate and hiring documents to homeowner. The homeowner quickly responded back with a commitment to hire, and within a couple days time, destructive remediation commenced. With the help of our Knowledgeable Production Technicians, and our proven remediation process, this bathroom is cleared of Mold, and the homeowner received Post Remediation Verification by a local Mold Inspector. Now this homeowner's DIY project is back on track.
